As I mentioned in my post about Memories of Murder, I might be a bit late to the party—something my son Leo never lets me forget! But better late than never, right? This 2016 production captures everything that defines a classic South Korean drama. I’ve noticed its influence on many newer productions, which speaks volumes about its legacy. A round of applause for the brilliant writer Park Ji-eun—her talent truly deserves its own post! Her works, especially Crash Landing on You, always top my list.

The Legend of the Blue Sea introduces us to Jun Ji-Hyun as a mermaid navigating the bustling streets of Seoul. Imagine Ariel from The Little Mermaid, but with a touch of Bridget Jones’ charm—endearingly clumsy, hilariously out of place, yet profoundly resilient. What’s refreshing is her evolution into a strong, independent woman making her own choices. Of course, being a South Korean drama, there’s still a Cinderella element, but the execution feels thoughtful and fresh.

Then there’s Lee Min-Ho, playing a suave con artist with a big heart. Handsome and full of surprises, he brings layers of charm and vulnerability to the role. When these two contrasting worlds collide, the chemistry is electric—unpredictable, dynamic, and utterly captivating. While I adore Song Joong-ki’s Vincenzo Cassano, Lee Min-Ho truly stole the show for me here.

This isn’t just a love story between characters from different worlds. It’s a rich blend of reincarnation, present-day adventures, and mysteries that unravel with a satisfying complexity. It feels like three dramas in one, seamlessly woven together. The visuals are equally breathtaking: underwater scenes so enchanting they might make you consider trading your legs for a tail, and stunning cityscapes that capture the magic of Seoul—and even Spain, in beautifully crafted moments. The fashion, too, deserves a mention: a dazzling mix of mermaid magic and couture that’s as captivating as the storyline itself.

The Legend of the Blue Sea is a feast for the eyes, the heart, and the imagination. Its humor, romance, and unique take on timeless themes make it an unforgettable experience.
