Expressing art through dramaturgy is an exquisite and charming endeavour that transcends the ordinary, and few embody this sentiment as beautifully as the legendary actress, Kim Hye-ja. As I explore the world of cinematic excellence, it’s only fitting to begin this third “Actor’s tribute” to a lady who has left an indelible mark on the world of films. In an industry often dominated by clichés, she stands apart as a true iconoclast. It’s truly an honour for me to have this platform, and be able to get into her craft. I can’t stop this feeling that, this will be the perfect “Actors” trend post to finish of 2023.

Among Kim Hye-ja’s many cinematic gems, the movie that stands out with resplendent brilliance is “Mother.” Directed by the visionary Bong Joon-ho, this film is a testament to the power of storytelling and the emotional depth that can be achieved through dramaturgy. I remember watching an interview with Bong attesting that she is the only reason why he decided to create the script and the movie itself! I can’t wonder why! Her “nameless” mother role, determined to do what ever takes for her mentally challenged son’s is heart-wrenching!

Honestly, when I think about the emotional benchmarks set by dramaturgy, my go-to reference is usually the widely acclaimed performance of Anne Hathaway—a standard for the highest level of emotional impact in her iconic role in “Les Misérables.” I’ve elaborated on this in my posts about “Lee Byung-hun”. My ethereal “Mr. Sunshine”. In an incredible scene from the drama “Our Blues,” she shares the screen with him, both achieving the same emotional depth, making it a truly memorable and impactful moment in my cinematic journey.

What makes Kim Hye-ja’s approach to dramaturgy truly unique is her seamless blending of vulnerability and strength. Breaking free from the confines of stereotypical roles for women in cinema.
